1. Tube and ferrule diameter range
Every machine is built to handle a specific range of tube or ferrule diameters — check this first. If you regularly work with very small or unusually large ferrules, make sure the model you choose covers that range; printing outside a machine's supported diameter simply won't work.
2. Production volume and print speed
If you're marking a handful of wires per job, print speed barely matters. If you're running daily production in a panel-building workshop or OEM line, a higher-speed model — like the LMark LK-360, rated up to 50 mm/s — will save real time over a slower, more basic machine.
3. How you'll create and input labels
Machines differ in how you get text onto the label: some have a full built-in keyboard and LCD display for typing labels directly on the machine; some also connect to a PC so you can design labels in software and import data from a spreadsheet for batch jobs; and app-controlled models are operated entirely from a smartphone over Bluetooth, with no keyboard at all. Pick based on how you actually work — a panel builder importing hundreds of tags from a wiring schedule wants PC connectivity; a field technician doing occasional labels on-site is usually better served by an app-controlled model like the LMark LK-280.
4. Memory and file storage
If you print the same label sets repeatedly, on-board memory to store label files matters — it saves re-typing the same text for recurring jobs. Higher-capacity models can store around 100,000 characters' worth of label data; simpler models hold less.
5. Cutting: manual vs. automatic half-cut vs. full-cut
Some machines require you to cut each printed label by hand. Others cut automatically — either a half-cut, which leaves labels attached on a strip until you tear them off, or a full-cut, which separates each label as it prints. Automatic cutting speeds up higher-volume work; manual cutting is fine for occasional, low-volume printing.
6. Portability vs. desktop use
A compact, battery- or app-controlled printer is easier to carry between job sites, but a desktop model with a full keyboard is usually faster to operate for repeated use at a fixed workbench. Decide based on where the printing actually happens.
7. Budget and consumables
Factor in not just the machine's price, but the ongoing cost and availability of its specific tube, tape, ribbon and heat-shrink cassettes. Ask your supplier which consumables a given model uses before committing.
